  The reason you haven't heard of this place is because they do a lousy job marketing themselves. The staff here are friendly and welcoming. This place is a restaurant/middle eastern food store combined into one place. It is reasonably priced (2 people can eat for less than $15) and there is no awkwardness about tipping. You have the option to tip the person who served you, but you can actually pay in a different location in the store. But everyone here is so nice, you actually want to give them something extra (although I never have). The food is prepared over a wood charcoal fire, where they have a lot of options to satisfy anyone's tastes! I would put this place first for Mediterranean food, right above Greek on Wheels, not to mention the price is better. The food quality is great as well. The restaurant seating area itself is more like a fast food restaurant, but it is pretty clean and brightly lit. This would be the only room for potential improvement, but it is decent to say the least. I wish the location was better or that they offered delivery service however, since I live downtown.

  Ask anyone about their favourite shawarma place in Ottawa and few would send you here. Take it from me, the herd doesn't always travel in the right direction. Just for today, forget about the Palace and take a walk with me. This Matar location combines a restaurant, meat shop and grocery store under one roof. As with most of my favourite places to frequent, it's quite necessary to look past the aesthetics and experience the food and service. I don't recommend it for sit-down dining. The eating area is small and spartan, and often there is cross traffic between the grocery store and restaurant side -- but it's great in every way that really matters to me. The food is top notch, the family that owns it are warm and friendly (particularly the gentleman who cooks), and the price is absolutely right. *** Even if you hate shawarma, go there for the potato wedges. The BEST I've had anywhere in North America.

  Fantastic Lebanese. Anything off the grill is fabulous. The fried chicken is also devine. No soggy K*C style here :-)
